What is the difference between a PC Body and a Magnesium Body when buying a camera?
We are considering buying the new Canon Eos 40D body only. Challenge is that some prices for $300 you can get a PC Body while for 1300 you can get a magnisum body. Which one is the best buy? What is the difference? Do we really need a magnisum body?
There’s no way you can buy an EOS 40D for $300.
Anyone who tells you that you can is about to rip you off. The camera body alone is about $1299.

Perhaps they were referring to lenses, some of which have plastic bodies.
Do you need a magnesium body? Well, if you want a tough camera and if you want to get a 40D, then the answer is yes. If you are price conscious, look at the Canon Rebel XTi, which is plastic over a Stainless Steel chassis but is a lot cheaper.
EDIT: sometimes on Google, you’ll see “featured” stores that steer you to rip off sites. For example, clicking on the “ShopCartUSA” will steer you to a seeming shopping site which refers you to well-known ripoff vendors like “Broadway Photo”, “BestPrice Cameras”, “Express Cameras,” etc. None of these places are legitimate sellers. It’s a fairly common scam to convince you that the lower price ($379) is for an “inferior” body–”it’s made in china” “the body is made of plastic” “the lens mount is plastic.” while you should buy the expensive one: “It’s made in Japan.” “the body is made of metal” “the lens mount is metal, not plastic.” Then the next part is to run up your credit card charges by adding on things that are supposed to be included (a battery for $299) or that are oversold and overpriced (like a Sigma lens sold to you at the same price as a Canon lens). Don’t fall for the scams!

Canon EOS 60D Prices
Canon has unveiled the EOS 60D mid-level DSLR, replacing the EOS 50D. However, following the launch of the EOS 7D, the 60D has been repositioned in the market, so isn’t a simple upgrade to its predecessor. Instead the 60D is a smaller camera featuring an articulated screen and plastic body shell and utilizing SD memory cards. It combines the 18MP CMOS sensor and 1040k-dot 3.0″ LCD from the EOS 550D (Rebel T2i) with the AF system from the 50D. Meanwhile it gains the 7D’s HD movie capability. We’ve had a chance to use a pre-production 60D so have prepared a hands-on preview, including sample images and movies. With the new EOS 60D DSLR, Canon gives the photo enthusiast a powerful tool fostering creativity, with better image quality, more advanced features and automatic and in-camera technologies for ease-of-use.
It features an improved APS-C sized 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor for tremendous images, a new DIGIC 4 Image Processor for finer detail and excellent color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities from 100-6400 (expandable to 12800) for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. The new Multi-control Dial enables users to conveniently operate menus and enter settings with a simple touch.
The Canon EOS 60D Prices also features an EOS first: A Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (1,040,000 dots) monitor for easy low- or high-angle viewing. Is buying a Canon Eos 40D SLR body only worth it?
I reallllly want this camera and I only have enough to buy it as body only. how much does a lens run for and is it absolutely necessary to have the lens right away
glad you asked. I was just about to post a question on here about lenses for that camera.
I own the 40D myself and it’s an outstanding camera. The kit lens, 28-135mm, is a piece of crap and I have NEVER heard of anyone using it. Almost everyone buys another lens for the 40D.
So I would highly recommend the body only for the 40D and buying other lenses. Oh, you’re short on money and want to know which lenses to buy? I’m glad you asked. : )
The 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. You have no zoom, but it is super fast and great for portraits. stand about 6 feet away and point at subjects face and you get their shoulders and head. Also, great for indoors because at f/1.8 you don’t need as much light. Best part: this lens can be found on amazon for $80 USD.
A cheap zoom lens is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. That’s the kits lens for the rebel, but it’s not that great either. without IS (if you can find it) it’s about $60-80 USD also. with IS it’s more like $150.
A cheap telephoto zoom lens is the 55-250mm f/3.5-5.6 with IS. That lens takes better quality pictures for a great price. It’s about $250.
I don’t entirely agree with above’s opinion. It is possible to learn how to do photography on your own with the camera. I bought the 40D from my uncle and bought those 3 lenses and walked around teaching myself, taking tips from others, and reading the 40D user manual. You can do it yourself, but I would only do it if you are serious about it. Although you DO need a lens to take pictures, otherwise the body alone is useless.
