How do you clean a fish tank bought at a yard sale?
It comes with rocks, plants, and a filter. But would we be better off buying new rocks and plants? Please answer this question! BEST ANSWER 10 POINTS? If this helps, its 5 to 6 gallons.
Do not use soap. Period.
Use lots of hot water and a little elbow grease. Is the tank acrylic or glass? If it is glass, you can use a razor blade to scrape off the white stuff (calcium deposits) or a bit of vinegar and water.
As for the gravel, I would just get new gravel. It would cost you less than $10 to get more than enough gravel for that tank (you need 5-10 pounds). Chances are that if the people are selling that tank at a garage sale, then things probably did not go well for them, otherwise they would still have it up and running. Who knows long that tank has been empty/dry and what their problems were. Snails, ick – I would just buy new gravel.
As for the decorations and plants, I would soak them in hot water. If they are really funky and that doesn’t work, then I would soak them in hot water and a dash of (wait for it, wait for it, thumbs down!) bleach. Just make sure you do this in a separate container that you will never use for fish. After they soak, rinse well. When you think they are rinsed, rinse for another minute or two, then soak them in another container with water and dechlorinator (sodium thiosulfate would work too, but I don’t know where you could get that easily). Rinse well. Rinse well again 
As for the filter, just get a toothbrush and scrub the crevices. Bring the filter to the pet store and they can help you determine what kind it is and what filter cartridges you need to purchase for it.

So, should you head on down and buy whatever they have regardless of what type or size of pool you and your “friend” have? After all, what is a pool filter anyway but some type of tank looking thing that the water goes through. What can be the big difference?
Shopping for the Best Deal
The truth, is that there is a big difference between pool filters and buying the wrong type or size can mean heading back and buying another much too soon. You “can” save money on a pool filter but you are going to have to sacrifice features or function in return.
Match the Filter to the Pump and the Pool
As far as size of your pool filter is concerned, that will be dictated by the size of your pool. Also, the size of your pool filter must correspond with the size of your pump which also corresponds to the size of your pool.
Three Basic Types
Beyond that, you have your choice of three basic types of swimming pool filters. Those are sand filters that use sand to process the pools water. Cartridge filters that use a cartridge to do the job or diatomatious earth pool filters that use a fine white powdered job to clean the water.
Get the Right Filter for Your Pool
Each type of pool filter has its own unique maintenance schedule and its own steps that have to be taken to insure that it is operating optimally. So, before you head on down and snap at the latest sale make sure that you are getting exactly what you need in the way of a swimming pool filter.

Do one gallon plastic containers made for sale of water pose a reuse risk (I keep them out of the sun)?
Thanks. I couldn’t find specifics for these containers in my search of this subject. I like to filter water into them for job site use.
