Flash Strobe
Something inside my 800 w/s flash strobe exploded. But it is still working! What happened?
I plugged it in and heard a slight popping sound. The flash power output was set at 400 w/s. I pushed the ‘Test’ button to fire the flash and something inside the flash unit exploded. Sounded just like one of those small red fire crackers.
The unit still fires flashes.
I’m assuming that there are several capacitors in parallel in the circuit and that one of them exploded.
Is it possible for capacitors to explode & if so, what causes them to explode?
The unit was a White Lighting, UltraZAP UZ800 Flash Unit.
yes they explode, at least the electrolytic type. they generate internal heat if too much current passes through them, the heat causes the chemicals to expand explosively. you really need to get the unit examined and cleaned. the chemicals from the capacitor are acids that can corrode other components they contact if not neutralized and cleaned out. the technician can spot the defective part visually.

The reason for their popularity is they are cheaper than most lights and are much easier to transport from place to place. The second kind is the power pack strobe lights. Power pack strobe lights also have a number of strobe heads, the difference being that all the strobe heads are wired to one power source. This type of strobe lights are favored because the different parts of the lights are interchangeable, making the light more reliable. The output of the strobe lights (power pack strobes) can also be easily increased by simply upgrading the power pack to a stronger one, and vice-versa to reduce the output.
strobe lights have various advantages and this is the reason they are so popular. strobe lights have a very long flash life. Most good quality have a life of about half million flashes. This means that the lights do not have to be constantly replaced, making it cheaper in the long run. strobe lights used in studios do not also generate heat as compared to others. This is because the flash will only go off if the light has been asked to. This reduces the risk associated with strobe lights that get to hot, such as burning flammable materials or people around the lights. The quality of the picture is also enhanced because of the flash produced by the strobe lights. The flashes result it good quality pictures as well as improved capturing of details.
There are however just a few disadvantages associated with studio strobe lights. strobe lights are very hard to use and so require a professional to operate. This means that ordinary people do not enjoy the possibilities offered by strobe lights. strobe lights used for flash photography must also be triggered by a camera, as they do not work independently form cameras. This means that there is an extra cost that is incurred to make sure that one uses strobe lights. High quality studio strobe lights are also very difficult to use and bulky to carry around in the outdoors, which proves to be a limiting factor as to where one can take photos.

Nikon SB-600 jpg metadata flash compulsory with strobe return?
I am using a nikon d90 with sb-600 flash in the shoe, bouncing off the ceiling and no strobes. However in the metadata the jpgs all show flash compulsory WITH strobe return, rather than NO strobe return. am i misunderstanding something or is a setting wrong, etc?
The SB-600 is the strobe.
The flash emits a pre-flash to meter the scene. It was able to measure that 1/16th power pre-flash, so it shows a return. If it hadn’t seen anything of value from the low power pre-flash you would see No Return.
In short, things are working as they should.
