Supervisor Carpenter Declares State of Emergency in Islip
Islip, NY – Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter declared a state of emergency in the Town of Islip at 12:01 am Thursday, January 4th, in response to Winter Storm Grayson, a severe winter storm in the Town of Islip, that brought heavy snow and icing, strong winds, extreme low temperatures, impassable roads, potential coastal flooding and other blizzard related hazards.
“Visibility is very poor, winds are high and driving conditions are extremely dangerous,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Such conditions imperil the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the Town of Islip. I’m urging everyone to stay safe and stay indoors. If you have an elderly or homebound neighbor, I would ask that you check on them when it’s safe to step outside,” she added.
The Town’s Department of Public Works launched its plow operation at 6:30 am Thursday morning, dispatching more than 450 pieces of equipment onto the Town’s 1,200 miles of roadways. Residents are reminded to move their cars off the roads and onto their driveway or lawn, so that crews can plow efficiently and safely. “Right now, our goals are to keep the roads open and passable to the extent that this is possible. Please be patient, the real clean-up will occur after the wind subsides, and we’re able to attack the storm,” said Tom Owens, Commissioner, Town of Islip DPW.
The Town’s Emergency Operation Center (EOC) opened at 5 a.m. “We’ve been monitoring the storm’s track for several days,” said Commissioner Tony D’Amico. “We are continuing to work with outside agencies, including the State and County’s Emergency Management Office, utility companies, school districts and local hospitals. Residents can call PSEG at 1-800-490-0075 to report a power outage,” he added.
Long Island MacArthur Airport is closed due to poor visibility. The traveling public is encouraged to check with their local carriers throughout the day for updates on flights. Town of Islip garbage collection has been suspended due to weather conditions, and will resume on the next scheduled pick-up day. The Town’s Planning Board Meeting has been cancelled today.
Town of Islip officials are asking residents to contact the Office of Constituent Services to report a problem at 631-224-5380. Residents are advised to visit the Town’s Facebook page, and to sign up for e-Alerts by visiting the Town’s website at www.islipny.gov.
