How do gills contribute to the quality of water itself, and underwater ecosystems?
In school I learnt that animals breath oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide- but how does this work underwater? Surely all water is H20. When fish breath that in through gills, does carbon dioxide come out as bubbles, or do they breath out a different quality of water, perhaps with a different chemical composition? What about underwater plants- do they breath in a kind of hydrogenated water, or are they fine with ordinary H20?
To sum up, what sort of gaseous exchange between organisms is going on underwater? Does it mirror that we have going on on land, or is it different, and if so, how?

I’m also wondering if the breathing of creatures underwater somehow complements the breathing of creatures onland.
Within a few feet of the surface of the water, where there is an exchange of gases to/from the atmosphere to the water, is where you will find most water life. This is possible because a very small amount of dissolved oxygen is present in the surface waters, and most water creatures need oxygen to metabolize food. (Some don’t). Surprisingly, the cooler the water, the more a gas dissolves into water. Coldwater fishes have an easier time “breathing” than warm water fishes. At depths beyond a thousand feet, very little or no oxygen is present and it is rare to find ocean life that doesn’t bring its oxygen down with them (e.g., in the lungs of a whale). Some creatures, near active volcanic vents, can metabolize food using sulphurous compounds rather than oxygen.
The gills of a fish can extract oxygen by having it bind to hemoglobin in their blood, much like the human body uses fluid to distribute and deliver oxygen. So even land creatures actually deliver the oxygen through a liquid medium.
The primary fish waste given off by the gills, however, is ammonia, which is also dissolved into the water and then broken down by bacteria into nitrites and nitrates.

A Quick Primer on Carbon Fiber Hoods
Did you know such as thing as “carbon fiber” existed? Have you any idea what carbon fiber is? Carbon fiber has been rising in popularity within the sports vehicle community. Manufacturers are employing it to make anything from carbon fiber hoods, to fenders, and even some interior pieces. Many consumers know and enjoy these products while simultaneously having no knowledge of what carbon fiber actually is. This article will discuss how carbon fiber was invited, what it can do, and the ways it is utilized.
Carbon fiber was first chiefly used by the aerospace and military arenas. At the time, carbon fiber was extremely expensive to produce so that is why only these two industries could afford it. It was only in recent years the production of carbon fiber hoods became more cost-efficient, which lowers the price while simultaneously augments its popularity. That’s why so many people can now afford to get a carbon fiber hood.
There are two procedures you can use to make carbon fiber for those oh-so-popular carbon fiber hoods. They are called “wet lay-up” and the “impregnated lay-up” processes. The “wet” requires less labor and less money. People who make their own carbon fiber normally favor this procedure. Dry fibers are fitted into molds and then resin is poured over the fibers. How much resin one uses depends on what one desires in thickness. If the resin isn’t distributed evenly, the carbon fiber outcome won’t be as strength-effective because certain portions have inconsistent resin amounts.
Pre-impregnated is much better in that it produces better quality results. The fibers are impregnated with resin before they are rolled onto spools and then into a freezer. Once frozen the curing process is cut off. Afterwards, the spools are put into a vacuum bag compaction before receiving oven treatment where the resin will become solid (solid resin means glass).
Car manufacturers started using carbon fiber during the 1970s. In 1977, Ford made a whole car entirely out of carbon fiber materials. During the 1990s, GM put out a concept car with carbon fiber hoods whose mileage was about 100 mpg. Carbon fiber cars allow for better performance vehicles which is why the industry is definitely paying attention to this material.
Since the cost of carbon fiber is currently very cheap, the industry is putting a lot of efforts into experimenting with it to produce new carbon fiber hoods and other carbon fiber products.
So the next time you’re thinking about buying carbon fiber hoods or any other carbon fiber item, you’re now educated to discern good quality carbon fiber so you know what your money is paying for.

What material is better quality for a knife set: forged high carbon steel or Stainless Steel?
I am comparing an Anolon set to a JA Henckels International. Are both materials dishwasher safe? Which is most rust resistant and longer lasting?
Neither of these makers mention exactly what grade of steel they use for their knives, so I can’t say anything as to their quality and performance. Good quality Knives should always be handwashed. If you handwash and store your knives in a knife block, rust shouldn’t be a big issue.
How long a knife lasts depends on quite a few different factors, but mostly on how often you use it or abuse it. An everyday kitchen knife may need to be sharpened every year or so.
I recommend having your knives sharpened by a professional. There are a lot of “sharpen at home” gadgets out there-most of them make it easy to permanently mangle your cutting edge and you’d end up having to take it to the pros anyway to be reground. Sharpening by hand requires a lot of skill, precision, and experience.
I actually prefer ceramic knives over steel. They’re about twice as expensive but they stay razor sharp for years.
